Boston noise punk duo AD.UL.T are getting ready to release No, Thank You, the band’s debut EP on December 9th. Today they are sharing the album’s second dose of wigged out punk, “Overfishing,” together with New Noise Magazine. The Boston underground has been pivotal for weirdo noise rock in the past decade thanks to bands like Guerilla Toss, Skimask, Arvid Noe, Pile, and (New England) Patriots and AD.UL.T are happy to carry the torch forward.
Most of the record’s songs revolve around a specific feeling and while the EPs first single was rooted in anxiety, “Overfishing,” is simply about… overfishing. The song is about how disgusting and destructive overfishing is to the environment and marine life, all of the waste it creates and the overall exploitative nature of the industry. “Overfishing” is the album’s most accessible track and a song with skronk reminiscent of Tom Morello’s best riffs and an infectiously hooky vocal melody.
Determined to create a unique and ruthless record, the duo of Ethan Hurwitz (guitar/vocals) and Brian Kelly (bass) enlisted former Fat History Month drummer Mark Fede to play on and record the album. Having produced albums for the aforementioned Guerilla Toss and (New England) Patriots, Fede was a natural fit for the freak prog and post-hardcore noise assault of AD.UL.T and the rattled eruptions of No, Thank You, recorded at Fede’s new studio, Bobby Hobby Lobby. The trio used the studio to their advantage, pushing the envelop with a variety of unusual sounds including actual reel-to-reel tape echo, Optigan, glass bottles and sawhorses for percussion, manual tremolo effects and more.

A great blue whale gets beamed up into a UFO in the Atlantic (far out of its usual breeding grounds). The music in it’s head is translated and calculated through a dipolar diamagnetic beam. This loud pop, noise-making, love music from the brains of the whale/alien collaboration is then sent telepathically into the hearts of the humans in AD.UL.T. Using electric basses and drums to transpose and perform the compositions, they sing and dance their way around the world, sadly having no choice in the matter.
No, Thank You is based around themes of “trying to be joyful even though we are literally in a living hell” as the band battle “seeing injustice and evil everywhere you look, but wanting to refuse and resist.” It’s not always easy to gather these sentiments from their music however, a chaotic blend of jagged rhythms, piercing noise, distorted vocals, and explosive riffs, squawks, and squeals that battle good sense at every turn. It’s twisted and unapologetically weird. It’s deliberately abrasive and yet hyper aware. The songs are melodic at their core, with just enough semblance of pop to retain their own sanity.
