Controlshot1Last year’s debut album ‘Hooligan Rock n Roll’ created quite a stir in punk/streetpunk circles. Widely regarded as the best debut album from a UK band in several years they became an instant hit with carefully crafted well produced tunes and thought provoking confrontational lyrics. Their music was used in the football hooligan film ‘Green Street 2’ and split 7” with The Business and Marching Orders followed. Live appearances at Rebellion and other festivals drew large audiences.

Following the album was always going to be difficult, but Control wisely didn’t rush to follow it up, they took their time writing and rehearsing an abundance of new material which has benefited from exceptional new drummer Robin Guy’s involvement and the masterful production skills of Rob Quickenden has given this album a huge sound that blends old school British Oi! like The Business with streetpunk bands like Argy Bargy and the intensity of Agnostic Front.

Lyrically vocalist Kilgallon hasn’t mellowed, we have the album title track that is probably auto-biographical, the anti-authoritarian rants of ‘Rebellion In My Blood’ and  ‘No More’, the fight-back  calls-to-action of ‘Wild Colonial Boy’ and ‘Job To Do’ and two highlights: ‘No Help For Heroes’ about our troops going off to fight inadequately prepared and ‘He’s A Skinhead’ a song about the persecution of skinheads and Oi! gigs by the establishment and media who stereotype all skinheads as mad and bad.

This album is a masterpiece and has raised the bar in production of songwriting, musicianship and production. A lot of other punk bands will have to up their game if they are to compete with Control.
