‘A Brief Crack Of Light’

I heard that I had been sent a link for the new Therapy? Album in the middle of a print design studio in Newcastle. Jus t like some of the designers, I think that some remember the Northern Irish band in the 1990′s and are surprised when you tell them; this is the rock outfit’s sixteenth album. Others thought at the pub, later that Therapy? Were a 21st century band; then there is the plastic generation that doubtless think psychology is dangerous – "you can get hooked". I give up after that comment.

So to ‘A Brief Crack Of Light’, I am pleased the band have not lost any of their powers, Therapy? Are still as powerful, direct with even more ideas moods and styles, the first single to be taken from e Adam Sinclair (New York Dolls, The Unthanks) produced album is ‘The Shadow Of The Terrible Thing” is as you would expect. A strong first outing, but wait, unlike the more mainstream 1996 sound of the band, 2012 finds more alternative, with a plethora of new ideas, angular guitars, driven rhythms breaking in to well studied harmonies, vocal and guitar effects.

Thje4 first five, six, seven do not dampen more enthusiasm for the single, ‘The ‘Shadow Of The Terrible Thing’, ‘Marlow’, ‘Ghost Trio’. Intros to say, ‘Before You, With You, After You’ I swear must come from producer Adam Sinclair, apart from being such another worthy song, the guitar intro is just so New York Dolls-esque. Seems the intrepid trio, of Andrew James Cairns (vocals/guitar), Michael McKeegan (bass) and Neil Cooper (drums) have found the perfect match with Adam Sinclair in the Newcastle based Blast Studios, all four have been busy, the outcome is varied, intriguing and industrious, just listen to ‘Get Your Dead Hand Off My Shoulder ‘. The very definition in 2012, of the words alt rock. 8/10
