Raphael Doyle and Tom Robinson were the founding members of acclaimed acoustic harmony trio Cafe Society in the 1970s. Whilst the pair parted ways after their 1975 debut release, both continued to pursue careers in music ever since.
In 2016, Raphael was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. In light of the news, he defiantly set about making the album he had always dreamed of.
Reuniting with Tom Robinson forty years on from their Cafe Society days, plus with the support from renowned folk talent Lisa Knapp, award winning producer Gerry Diver, the legendary Barry ‘Bazza’ Grint and most of all, his own musician son Louis Doyle, Raphael has completed the record and will release the stunning resultant album: “Never Closer” on Cooking Vinyl records on 27th January 2017.

“Never Closer is a reflection that there is darkness and there is recovery, there is pain and there is love. And at end of the record Raphael powerfully, quietly and gladly concludes that it is all – definitely – worth it.”

On 27th January 2017, celebrated songwriter and former vocalist of Cafe Society – RAPHAEL DOYLE – will release the album: “Never Closer”.
In 1969 Raphael Doyle left his native County Antrim for England – where he was soon discovered by blues legend Alexis Korner, and went on to form a teenage musical partnership with Tom Robinson and fellow Teesider Hereford Kaye – the acoustic harmony trio: Café Society. The band quickly won a following on the London folk club circuit and a Tuesday night residency at The Troubadour folk club in Earl’s Court. There they were discovered by none other than Ray Davies of The Kinks – who went on to produce their debut album, which was released to acclaim in 1975.
After four decades of what he describes as “a messy life”, in the last 12 months Raphael was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.
In the face of such adversity, his musician son Louis Doyle coaxed his dad back into the studio to start work on the album they had always dreamed of making and together they quickly set about recording this ‘Never Closer’ for release early in 2017.
Supported by friends and family through a campaign on crowdfunding site PledgeMusic, Raphael and Louis have joined forces with virtuoso Irish musician and producer Gerry Diver [Youth, Van Morrison, Christy Moore, Shane McGowan] on the album – which is titled Never Closer after a poem by the great Seamus Heaney [“When all the others were away at Mass”].
The album includes guest appearances by award-winning folk vocalist Lisa Knapp and former bandmate Tom Robinson, and was mastered by the legendary Barry “Bazza” Grint [ known for his work with Paul Simon, Prince, Puff Daddy, Madonna, David Bowie etc ]. Its potent lyricism and honesty have already won Raphael Doyle acclaim from Across The Line to The Huffington Post.
The first piece to emerge is Raphael’s unflinchingly honest eight minute poem “I Come From Ireland“. The music has been composed and produced by Gerry in his trademark style first heard on his award-winning Speech Project in 2012.
“I Come From Ireland” is now available as an instant download for everyone who pre-orders the album via Raphael’s PledgeMusic page: pledgemusic.com/raphaeldoyle.
‘Never Closer’ by Raphael Doyle will be released on Cooking Vinyl on 27th January 2016.
