“More Than This” is the brand new single from Australian musician Amaya Laucirica. Blending swirling contours and motoric beats with wistful melodies and sonic feedback, Amaya achieves a wonderfully complex and varied palette, with the assistance of band members Andrew Keese (a singer-songwriter in his own right, on guitar and keyboards),
Hugo Cran (from Beggars Banquet alumnus The Devastations on drums) and Giles Fielke (previously of Lowtide on bass).

The track is accompanied by a stunning video directed by Geoffrey O’Connor, which was premiered via Gold Flake Paint who wrote, “‘More Than This’ is a brooding, wonderfully compelling swirl of colour and charisma, the track drifting (pertinently, never forgettably) through six-and-a-half captivating minutes, while the video’s main star, dancer Ogemdi Ude, throws all manner of considered shapes alongside, beautiful and engaging in equal measure.”

The title of the single “More Than This” derives from the lyric in the chorus; “are you and me something more than this.” As Amaya explains, the words came to her in a dream; “This song is all about the repetition of the rhythm. It echoes the hypnotic nature of getting lost in the night, losing yourself in the moment and not questioning where it will take you.”

The video stars Oge Ogemdi, who interprets the song with a dreamlike, but strong and poised energy. Amaya says; “My idea for the film clip was for somebody to interpret a dance sequence to it. The song has a repetitive and hypnotic energy about it that lends itself to flow and movement. Oge had just moved into my apartment building when I had the idea and I found out quickly that she was a dancer. Even though I’m not well versed in dance culture, we shared a similar interest in a particular dance group and I just knew she would create something wonderful. When we were filming the clip, it was the first time I had seen her perform and I was so blown away.”

The single is available now via Opposite Number.

Amaya Laucirica reveals video for new single "More Than This" due out via Opposite Number on 15 September

Over the course of two EPs, three albums and countless live shows Amaya Laucirica has established a unique presence in the Australian musical landscape.

From her childhood in rural South Australia, Amaya first moved to Sydney before finally settling in Melbourne where, in 2008, she released her debut album Sugar Lights. A beguiling and delicate blend of country, folk, rock and pop, Sugar Lights was critically lauded and resulted in Amaya being invited to perform at the North by Northeast (NXNE) music festival in Canada.

In 2010 she released Early Summer, an album that truly defined Amaya’s sound and captured the attention of critics and listeners alike. Early Summer was recognised as JJJ’s “Album of the Week” and led to Amaya undertaking a series of shows with respected international acts such as Blonde Redhead, Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age) and a national tour with Australian rock icon, Adalita in 2011.

Her third album, Sway was released in 2014 and supported by national tour dates covering both regional areas and capital cities. In addition to these dates, Amaya also performed shows at MONA, White Night and Melbourne Music Week.

In 2015, Amaya relocated to Berlin where she resided for several months while working on her forthcoming fourth album, Rituals. Whilst there, she played shows in other parts of Germany and toured in Spain. She returned to Australia in 2016, where she put the new band together to record Rituals, which was produced by John Lee at Phaedra Studios and mastered by David Walker at Stepford Mastering.

“More Than This” is the first single from the album. It will be released digitally on 15 September via Opposite Number. It is accompanied by a stunning video directed by Geoffrey O’Connor.
