Twenty five years since the accidental experimentations with the Roland 808 on tunes such as Acid Tracks created the genre of acid house there have been many mutations of it, from the pop trash of every act getting an acid mix in the late 80’s to the regular use of 303’s on the acid techno and hard house scenes of the mid to late 90s.
These days however, acid house is just that, artists such as Boys Noize and Tevo Howard and labels like as Poker Flat stick pretty close to the template for pure acid house, acts no longer mutate these sounds preferring to make great 21st century acid faithful to the original sound. A particularly strong example of this is the recent release by house artist Funkineven and the devastating ‘Rolands Jam.
This killer tune on Plump Dj’s label Grand Hotel is just as effective, more tear up than the chin stroke acid of ‘Roland’s Jam’ but equally as vital, when the 303’s rip into this track there is only one outcome and it’s a sweaty one, acid revival? Nah, it never went away, it’s just that it’s as important a genre now as it ever was. 9/10
