Cardinals Folly are a three piece doom metal outfit hailing from Helsinki, Finland who once went by the name of The Coven. After several EP releases and even a live album Cardinals Folly have finally finished their first full length studio release.
Doom is a niche genre where listeners need a lot of patience to be able to tolerate the length and simplicity of tracks that consist mainly of the same structure over and over. Doom usually consists of a heavy guitar riff that is complimented by the bass shadowing this then a pounding drum beat and an eerie vocal. Cardinals Folly are following the doom rule book here.
Cardinals Folly pull off the entire doom sound well but this just doesn’t push my buttons or rev my engine in anyway. Yes it all goes together well and I like my heavy abrasive music but even I must ask why have two songs that reach over the ten minute mark? There is only so much one man can take in one track.
The structure in its entirety is there but for this reviewer I can only say that I have not been converted to genre that is known as doom. Yes these may be some of the heaviest riffs I’ve heard in a long time but even Iron Man by Sabbath would become tiresome if its main riff was played over and over for ten minutes.
Not my thing but if you are into bands like Type O Negative and Wino, then Cardinals Folly may be right up your street. 7.8/10
