While the US ‘discovers’ techno despite the damn stuff originating from there, it’s business as usual in France, a country that spits out quality electronic music constantly and on D-R-U-N-K on this showing don’t need an EDM, IDM tag or a featuring Pitbull co-listing such as electro house suckmeisters such as Guettaet all.
D-R-U-N-K is a side project of Oly Grasset who also makes up one half of industrial electro act MOTOR, although this EP is in a much more techno vein, although the harsh electronics of his day job shine through each of the tracks.
An electronic female voice declares she doesn’t need to eat/work/sleep/network on opening track ‘I don’t need to sleep’ just prior to stomping techno beats and ear shredding layers of noise discomfort. The deeper ‘Syn-tax error’ is even better, the propulsive beat and cold synthtronica is the kind of thing Miss Kittin & DJ Hell rely on for their DJ sets. With the electronic world either being overly anoraky and clever or toilet scrapingly bad, it’s heartening to see producers who just wanna cut a bunch of bangers creating to rip shit up on the dancefloor.
Making up the EP are two mixes of the main track, one of them revisits the bad old days of electroclash (albeit credibly) and the other brings Belgian nu-beat filth up to date nicely. 8/10
