After five years apart, the world was elated to learn that the seminal alternative hip-hop group Digable Planets reunited last year for a hometown Seattle show and subsequent tour.
The jazz-rap trio of of Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler, Mary Ann “Ladybug Mecca” Vieira , and Craig “Doodlebug” Irving produced the breezy, catchy mega-hit with”Rebirth of Slick.” Between the pulsating bass and infectious “I’m cool like dat” refrain, it’s no wonder the single hit the Billboard Top 20. Savvy Nineties-rap fans rejoiced when Digable Planets member Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler resurfaced more than 15 years later with the heady, avant-garde-leaning Shabazz Palaces.7

Digable Planets are an American alternative hip hop trio based in Brooklyn, New York, composed of Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler (from Seattle), Mary Ann “Ladybug Mecca” Vieira (from Silver Spring, Maryland) and Craig “Doodlebug” Irving (from Philadelphia).
Butler and Irving met in Philadelphia in the late 1980s; Vieira and Irving had been a couple while attending Howard University. Originally from Seattle, Butler was interning at Sleeping Bag Records in New York and would visit his grandmother in Philadelphia where Irving was living and rapping with an outfit called the Dread Poets Society (later known as the 7 OD’s).
