Dredd is an interesting film and that is not just WithGuitars opinion. For one, it’s a remake that a lot of people were opposed to when it was first announced. The original film wasn’t anything to write home about and for many people, it didn’t need to be remade. When the film did enter into production, news was quiet and hard to come by. For a long time we knew next to nothing about it.
Then, the marketing campaign kicked into gear. Trailers were released, photos were shared and the production opened right up. At first, responses were mostly negative, with many people calling the film a rip off of The Raid: Redemption. But then something happened. The film was screened at Comic-Con and the reception was extremely positive. Things took a complete sea change and now, anticipation for the film is at an all time high.
The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge — a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.
During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighbourhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound’s control centre and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.
Who’s in it?
Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlb, Lena Headey, Domhnall Gleeson
WithGuitars recently got a butchers at the first teaser trailer for Dredd; the upcoming adaptation of the classic 2000AD comics (which is looking to fully distance itself from the failed Sylvester Stallone movie Judge Dredd), and now a brand new clip from the film has been released online, and can be viewed below.
Showcasing a short scene in which Dredd (now played by Star Trek’s Karl Urban), and his rookie partner Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby, No Strings Attached), storm a drug den and attack a bunch of addicts high on fictional drug Slo-Mo, the clip gives us an idea of the style of the Pete Travis (Vantage Point) directed movie, which will find Judge Dredd and his partner trapped in, and storming, a 200-story tower block in order to judge drug baron Ma-Ma (Lena Headey. Also co-starring Domhnall Gleeson (True Grit), Dredd is due to be released on September 7th in the UK, before making its official US release date on September 21st.
