Dublin band JAPE are making their comeback to the picnic this year, the electronic rock band have a new album ‘Ocean of Frequency ‘coming out in September. The band fronted by Richie Egan will be hoping to electrify the crowd in Stradbally once again with another storming performance at the picnic like they have done in the past.
Another band making their return to Stradbally are Belfast instrumental band AND SO I WATCH YOU FROM AFAR to display once again their punk rock pure instrumental genius. The band won best EP at the Digital Socket Awards in Dublin this year and are no strangers to big festivals having played Lowlands, Pukklepop and Electric Picnic previously. Their instrumental brilliance will be warmly welcomed back to the festival by picnicers.
After 18 years apart the acclaimed Wexford band CRY BEFORE DAWN have finally reformed.Over the course of their career Cry Before Dawn had two hugely acclaimed multi platinum albums Crimes of Conscience and Witness for the world. Cry Before Dawn sold out tours in UK and Ireland over the course of their career and performed on the institution that was BBC’s Wogan. Brendan Wade, Vinnie Doyle, Pat Hayes and Steve Belton are set to make a truly memorable performance at EP this year.
Another act on the verge of world domination is Danish singer NANNA ØLAND FABRICUSl aka OH LAND. After years of wowing audiences in Denmark she has now released her eponymous second album worldwide. Produced by Dan Carey (Franz Ferdinand, Christina Aguilera) and Dave McCracken (Beyonce, Ian Brown), Oh Land is causing shockwaves with her twisted electronic pop. Pop royalty Katy Perry has even invited Oh Land to support her on her world tour. Catch OH LAND first at Stradbally before her career goes stratospheric.
GORDON GANO AND THE RYANS: Gordon Gano might be better known to the masses as founder member of the Violent Femmes in which he was guitarist, lead singer and songwriter. After a final break up of the VF, Gano started performing and touring with Billy and Brendan Ryan from the Bogmen and they released their first album Under the Sun in September 2009. A filled-out next chapter to the music of the Femmes, Under the Sun is the music of a mature band, a band made of men not boys, men who have supplanted wonder for angst, controlled passion for reckless abandon. They will be playing some back catalogue from the Violent Femmes as well as their music from Under the Sun.
Making their picnic debut this year are critically acclaimed Sydney quartet THE JEZABELS. Music Week have declared them “a band on the cusp of greatness” and The Guardian made them Band of the Day. Following thrilling shows this year at SXSW and The Great Escape the band signed with PIAS to release their debut LP Prisoner in Spring 2012.
Matador Records signees, Brighton 3 piece ESBEN AND THE WITCH, released their debut album in January 2011, described by the Guardian as hovering somewhere between goth, electronica, trip-hop and post-rock. Esben and the Witch channel literature, nature and sorrow to create hauntingly ethereal tales of dark, foreboding romance. Having played Crawdady earlier this year, the Picnic will be their second trip to Ireland.
If you haven’t come across them before, JAMES CHANCE ANDTHE CONTORTIONS were a bunch of New York No Wavers that liked to pish music, and in particular saxophones, to breaking point. James Chance resurfaced with his European band (les Contortions) who were key figures from the No Wave music scene in the 70s after working on other projects. Their music catalogue is essential for any punk, funk and jazz fans and they are coming to the Picnic to exhilarate Irish music fans.
Freshly anointed as “the greatest rock n roll band in Dublin” by influential UK magazine Artrocker THEMINUTES are a three piece band hailing from Dublin. The band surgeon rampant garage rock ‘n’ roll with elements of the blues and gospel and have been taking the Irish gig scene by storm this year. Their debut album Marcata comes on the back of a string of excellent singles, all of which singled the 3 piece out as one of the year’s most notable bands to keep an eye on and one to see at this year’s Picnic.
Neil O’Connor brings his solo project SOMADRONE to the Picnic this year for some electronics, ambience, pop structures and vocals. Musician Neil has been a notable fixture on the Irish independent music scene for over decade now, through his work with the Redneck Manifesto, Connect Four Orchestra, Jape and of course Somadrone.
Born in London, raised in Dublin and strutting out of an epicentre of cool, BITCHESWITH WOLVES exploded onto the world’s dance scene. Fronted by flamboyant James O’Neill they have performed support slots for Tinie Tempah, Calvin Harris, Groove Armada, Datarock, Fatboy Slim to name a few. The trio underpin their extroverted glamour with a genuine sense of musical adventure.
SHOUTING ATPLANES are an alternative Irish band who got their big break at one other than the Glastonbury festival last year. Amazingly, the band had only been playing together for three months when they got this big break. They have gone on to play at many festivals and gigs since then and are now ready to grace Electric Picnic with their presence.
NIGHTBOX are currently tearing up the Toronto music scene and various blogs. They are originally from Wicklow and have spent a year in Toronto building a strong fanbase via uproarious gigs at the city’s premier live music venues.Nightbox are unknown here but are signed to the same label as Two Door Cinema Club, the uber-cool French label Kitsuné.
