Cosmic synth pop duo GL have announced their debut album Touch, which will be released July 15th via Midnight Feature/Plastic World.
Consisting of 14 compact and dynamic tracks, Touch is an exhilarating master class in visceral electro boogie, party-time soul and gritty analogue funk. It demonstrates the duo’s dexterity at crafting not only infectious and heartbreaking dancefloor-minded pop gems, in tracks such as ‘Indigo’, ‘When Your Love Was Mine’, ‘Hallucinate’ and ‘Melanie’, but also exploratory, largely instrumental interludes such as ‘Contact’, ‘Honey’ and ‘Stars’, making the album flow as a gripping linear journey.

The duo of Ella Thompson and Graeme Pogson met through playing together in different bands while growing up in their native Melbourne. GL was born out of a new and stripped back musical approach for the pair, when they decided they wanted to channel the physical feeling of funk and soul and the mentality of live performance as they began dabbling in electronic production, synthesizers and drum machines.
They introduced this sound with the glistening Love Hexagon EP in 2014 as well as follow up single and album opener ‘Number One’ in 2015, which won them international recognition from publications such as The Guardian, i-D, The Fader, V Magazine, XLR8R and others. The releases led to the band becoming live favorites on the Australian festival circuit, as well as being invited to support Chet Faker on his mammoth Australian tour.
Infectiously energetic yet brimming with disarming honesty, GL’s debut album is a mature take on electronic funk and soul that finds the perfect balance between honoring the originators of the sound and sounding as fresh and adventurous as anything around, all the while remaining committed to the underlying principles of song craft.
A recurring theme is body contact: sweating silhouettes and music that releases a physical reaction. “It is very much dance music, but also about physical love”, Ella says. ‘Grip’, the first track to be unveiled from the album, is about “the moment when something takes its grip and really has a hold on you, it can feel like a game of cat and mouse. You might say all the right things, try and keep your cool, but in the end your body does the talking.” The track shows off Ella’s soaring vocals, whilst Graeme adds a throbbing bassline for a heady party starter. New single ‘Hallucinate’ is a synth-bass heavy, boogie-inspired jam with a heartfelt and lush vocal at its core, exploring the “highs and lows of love and everything in between”, says Ella.
At once ebullient, melancholic, amorous, sweet, tempestuous, sexy, nocturnal, heartbroken and carefree, Touch never loses site of being consistently inviting, stylish and danceable.
