Legendary London rock’n’roll band The Godfathers kickstart 2017 with one almighty bang in the form of a brand new studio album, A Big Bad Beautiful Noise.
Recorded in Birmingham during the summer, the 11-track album will be released on Friday 10 February, preceded by a single ‘You Don’t Love Me’ on 3 February and accompanied by the first in a series of dates that will take them around the world throughout the year. The album is the first to feature the newly revitalised Godfathers line-up of frontman Peter Coyne, guitarists Steve Crittall and Mauro Venegas, drummer Tim James and bassist Darren Birch.
Says Peter, “It’s very important to myself and the rest of the band that The Godfathers make a kick-arse, contemporary rock’n’roll record that expands upon the musical legacy of the great Godfathers’ albums – Hit By Hit, Birth School Work Death,More Songs About Love And Hate and Unreal World. And I believe we’ve just done that…”
Originally formed in 1985 by brothers Peter and Chris Coyne (bass/vocals) from the ashes of their previous band The Sid Presley Experience, The Godfathers quickly earned a serious reputation for their electrifying brand of primal rock & roll and their incendiary live shows, aided and abetted by a string of classic singles (‘I Want Everything’, ‘Love Is Dead’, ‘Birth School Work Death’, ‘She Gives Me Love’) and chart-bothering albums (Hit By Hit, Birth School Work Death, More Songs About Love And Hate, Unreal World) through their own Corporate Image label and later Sony/Epic.
The Godfathers’ mob inspired image, raw lyrics and guitar-driven, edgy rock’n’roll was in direct contrast to the clean, synthesized sounds that mainly dominated the mainstream charts at that time and foreshadowed the Brit-Pop/Rock resurgence of the early 1990s. It earned them several sold-out international tours, numerous radio hits and celebrity fans such as David Bowie and Johnny Depp.
Having imploded at the turn of the century, the original line-up reformed in 2008 to promote the vastly expanded 2CD version of their classic debut Hit By Hit, performing a select number of British, European and US dates together for the first time in nearly 20 years.
The Godfathers have become increasingly influential in recent years, with Top 5 US artists Local H & Spoon covering the classics ‘Birth School Work Death’ and ‘This Damn Nation’, while The Mars Volta have cited the band’s primal rock’n’roll sound as a direct influence on their Noctourniquet album.
In 2016, The Godfathers’ sharp new line-up proved their chops with a sold-out European Tour, headline appearances at Camden Rocks and Spain’s Motorbeach Festival and a showstealing performance at the iconic Isle Of Wight Festival.
