‘I Don’t Belong to Anyone’
Premiered on Friday at nataal.com Hejira share their video for ‘I Don’t Belong to Anyone‘, directed by Emile Ebrahim Kelly – a sensual but playful meditation on the process of discovering one’s identity in two very different worlds.
Originally posted in November, the track was picked up by 6Music’s Giles Peterson, becoming ‘Track of the Day’ at Clash Magazine and ‘Track of the Week’ at the Guardian Guide who praised its ‘raw, jerky Afro-funk’ groove.
The video reflects on the band’s visit to Ethiopia in January 2016; something of a spiritual homecoming for singer Rahel Debebe-Dessalegne who had not returned to the country since her father was buried there in 2012. Accordingly, it features a rich tapestry of video and photographic footage from the band’s trip, juxtaposed with footage from London and intercut with archive family photos.
Rahel’s performance in the video explores this theme of multiple identities through the ritualistic adorning of a mesmerising mash-up of petals, colourful shrubs and ancient Ethiopian jewellery. The transformation enabled Rahel to embody and access a significant part of her heritage, which was both cathartic and freeing:
“It feels really good to celebrate every aspect of self and that’s what this song and video does for me. Coming back from Ethiopia I felt charged. I was totally in awe of the tribal styles and history of my heritage so when we came to the process of adornment for the video it was a really strange but special moment for me. It felt like I was embodying something new and ancient at the same time. It was as if I could feel the weight of my ancestors lifting me. This gave me a strong sense of dignity and pride for that part of my heritage which I’d never really experienced before.”
