Toronto’s Hooded Fang have released the debut album’s title track ‘Tosta Mista’ as their next single. Which is named, so I am told, for the toasted sandwiches sold in their mostly-Portuguese neighbourhood. First impressions are of Dick Dale, this is Dick Dale-esque, which is as much about the guitar sound as it is the chord arrangements, think Man Or Astroman? and you have one of many flavours of this single. It is undoubtedly a hip-shaking track, although given the 1950s beach footage in the video for ‘Tosta Mista’ which suggests an uptempo number. But the Canadian band have gone for a more subdued feel, rather that some high energy monster guitar attack.
When you got fans like Zane Lowe on-board, I guess this is another marker the single deserves, as one of the strongest songs from their first outing. I had, after the third listen, come up with an embryotic idea of an end quote, at least until I read the press release although not the most accurate, but the phrase will probably come to haunt the band, but, I quote “…that comes on like The Velvet Underground in Hawaiian shorts.” Could not say anything better. 7.75
