Word around the campfire has been that the upcoming album from the Southend all things hip revivalist outfit The Horrors will be their most progressive collection yet. Judging by this newest effort, one might be skeptical of such an early conclusion.
‘Something To Remember Me By’ is the title of the latest offering and it seems perhaps an upgrade from their most recent attempt at something with a pop sensibility considering this is actually memorable. Those who might’ve found Luminous a tad disappointing after the one two punch of ‘Primary Colors’ and ‘Skying’ might have something to be excited about.
The rhythm section sets off on a pop punk crusade which the rest of the band tempers with guitar squalls and synth stabs until singer Faris Badwan brings it all into focus with a hook that immediately grabs the listener, and will most likely drive you a little nuts in short time.
The press releases have been sounding King Crimson but this has more in common with New Order. Whatever the eventual outcome, this warrants serious anticipation. 8/10
