This will be the third album from Welsh psychedelic rockers Howl Griff. Entitled ‘Fragile Diamond’ and due for release on 15th October by Dockrad Records. Their previous work includes their eponymous and critically acclaimed Welsh language album as well as the English LP ‘The Hum’ which was featured heavily on BBC 6music. Their new album was recorded at The Fold in South East London and was expertly engineered / mixed by Ollie Colling and Gareth Cobb.
The title single has already been labelled BBC Wales Single of the Week and is an easy flowing harmony with folksy overtones and is based upon the birth of a family members ‘miracle baby’. While the single ‘Meet My Maker’ is based upon the real life trauma experienced by Griff when he went blind while driving down the fast lane of the M4. With its deeply moving and slightly ominous lyrics and a drum beat as steady as a heartbeat it is a subdued yet insistent song.
Most of the songs in this album are based upon life events that the members have undergone and this shines through in their story telling style lyrics.
The album is a deep, rich, and filled with variety. Each song has its own unique signature sound ranging from 70’s electro rock, to folk, to pop.The album evolves as you listen to it leading you further into the bands life stories.
Howl Griff will be appearing live on 20th September at The Albany, Great Portland St, London; 23rd September Earl Haig Memorial, Cardiff; and further dates to be confirmed for September in Manchester and North Wales. 9/10
