Imperial Leisure originally are from London and now based in Bristol, where the ska/2Tone scene is said to be far more vibrant. They’ve played Glastonbury Festival twice (2008 and 2016) and their third album ‘Lifestyle Brand’ is featuring the new single ’Animal’.
Denis Smith, lead MC and vocalist with the alt-ska act, was forced to take some time out in 2016 following a cancer diagnosis. Just over a year later and he’s ready to release ‘Animal’ – the band’s latest single. “I bounced back quite well, having stopped the cancer in its tracks in its early stages,” reflects Denis. “I’m feeling rather blessed now and it’s what spurred us on to set out on a free Christmas charity fundraising mission back in December.”
Back on track for 2017, the band is gearing up to release new single ‘Animal’, which comes across bright pacey and tent-sized. Live I’ve heard recommendations from various friends and it’s no surprise the accompanying video is cut with live performances, spaced between the pool action. The band’s brand of alt-ska seems to be working out pretty well, the single ‘Animal’ get’s your foot tapping. A solid entertaining release, looks good for Imperial Leisure to have a fruitful summer for starters They play Camden Rocks on June 3rd. 7.8/10
