The Box Tiger is an indie rock band from the outskirts of Toronto led by singer/guitarist Sonia Sturino. Formed in late 2009, the group grew out of Sonia’s need to escape the mundanity of suburban living. The band’s sound comes off as mature and well organized whilst maintaining the heart, intensity and honesty of youth. Despite where they may have come from, The Box Tiger is nothing close to mundane.

After meeting through finding each others’ music on MySpace in early 2009, Jordan Stowell encouraged Sonia to move forward with new songs she had been writing after her previous band’s break-up and take charge with a new musical direction. With a new focus, a band of friends and acquaintances was gathered together by Sonia and the group began working on new music. This original line-up released a five song self-titled EP in 2010. The Box Tiger played shows with the original line-up for about a year until Portland, Maine, native Jordan Stowell made the jump to join the band in Summer 2011 with hopes of recording later in the year.

By the Fall of 2011, three members of the original line-up parted ways with the band. At this point, Sonia and Jordan – along with newly added drummer Marcus Cipparrone – started to demo and craft the songs that would make up the band’s debut full-length, “Set Fire.”

The three went into the studio at Coalition Entertainment in Scarborough, Ontario in April of 2012. The band took on the daunting task of self-producing and financially backing the album, which proved to be a difficult and time-consuming endeavor for the band. After recording the instrumental tracks in April, the rest of the Summer was spent trying to pin down studio time between shows and tours.

Although he does not play on the album (the bass is played by Jordan Stowell), Benjamin Tran joined the group in late Spring of 2012. With the final line-up solidified, the band began doing short tours of Canada and the northeast U.S. to regain a the strong live presence they had been known for.

Between playing shows, Sonia spent most of the Summer months of 2012 driving back and forth from her job at a bakery in the suburbs to Anthony Calabretta’s home studio in Toronto to record the vocals for the record.

Using Jordan’s connection to Maine, the record was then brought to South Portland, Maine, where it was mixed and mastered at Forest City by Ron Harrity. This choice proved to be the saving grace of the album, as Harrity guided it to becoming the record the band had been hearing in their heads for so long. This was where the full aura and potential of the songs finally came to be.

Between touring independently and opening for bigger acts, The Box Tiger has managed to gain a loyal fan base in Southern Ontario and the North East U.S., where they have had the chance to play with bands such as  The Joy Formidable, …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead,  Frank Tuner, and San Cisco.

The band’s line-up has shuffled since its beginning in 2009,  but it has allowed for Sonia to more completely understand and hone the sound that is The Box Tiger. “Set Fire,” the band’s debut album, is set to be release on August 6th, 2013. It ultimately encapsulates the growth, journey, and obstacles of the band’s four years of existence. The sound comes off as heartfelt and intense, because nothing good comes easy. The Box Tiger could not be more excited to share this new record with the rest of the world.
