James Cook’s new album ‘Arts & Sciences’ is set for release through DeepSeeMusic on the 15th of October 2012 . The eponymously titled fourth single ‘Arts and Sciences’ and it’s accompanying video, directed by Graham Maguire and edited by Chris Corner, is due out at the end of September and will swiftly be followed by another single release.
James Cook is a true renaissance man; a talented singer, an impressive front man, actor, producer, video artist and an incredibly charismatic performer. His new album ‘Arts & Sciences’ is no less eclectic, combining a dark meditate soundscape with intelligent use of synth, guitars and strings, making this album a true pop commentary.
Cook’s previous incarnation was in the band Nemo (winner ‘Best New Band’ Montreux Jazz Festival 2006), the influential underground London four piece released three albums between 2004 and 2008, pioneering the UK electro rock sound supporting the likes of Imogen Heap and We Are Scientists. Furthermore, Cook wrote songs and made countless character cameos for hit BBC TV show ‘The Mighty Boosh’. Nemo disbanded in 2008, urging Cook to move to Berlin, James says this relocation gave him ‘space and time to write’. As a producer for Prague electro rock legends ‘Sunshine’, Cook won a Czech Grammy for best album in 2008. In 2009 Cook recorded the Baroque Pop curio album ‘The Dollhouse’ with violinist and collaborator Anne Marie Kirby. A tremendous and original sound recording, three of the tracks were eventually reworked for his current record.
’Arts & Sciences’ was recorded in Berlin during 2010 and 2011, all ten tracks reveal a diversity in Cook’s repertoire utilising dexterous synth lines and buzzing guitar riffs, loops, piano, acoustic guitar and intricate arrangements to elevate further his witty, heartfelt song writing that oozes personality. ‘Arts & Sciences’ features players such as Phil France from The Cinematic Orchestra, as well as Chris Corner (IAMX, The Sneaker Pimps) who also assisted on mixing, editing and mastering the album. The video for the album’s debut single ‘Face to Face’ was also directed by Chris Corner, as was the fantastic ‘End of Summer’.
Cook’s growing international fanbase has seen him tour all around the world in the last 18 months. From Czech Republic to Los Angeles, Argentina to Germany, London via Austria through to Uruguay. With a further three videos in production and a feature length DVD release in the pipeline, we warn you to dismiss this man at your peril.
