The latest album from Jonathan Boulet is titled ‘We Keep The Beat, Found The Sound, See The Need, Start The Heat’ and is available now from Modular Recordings. For those of you who haven’t heard of him Jonathan Boulet is an artist who hails from Australia and specialises in folk pop heavy on the drum beats, he also happens to have one of the beat beards I’ve seen for awhile. He performs in the indie rock band Parades, Snakeface, and Top Band as well as touring with his own unique sounds with the likes of Kate Nash, Tame Impala, and Mumford and Sons.
From its almost frantic and somewhat chaotic opening this album grabs your attention and demands, politely, that you listen to it.Heavily laden with massive drum beats and percussion instruments of all shapes and sizes it picks you up, slams you down, before flying off in another direction completely. Now don’t think this isn’t deliberate, because it is, it might at first seem to be a chaotic mess but actually it’s a very clever and very well done album. For once it makes a refreshing change for the drums and percussion to take centre stage amidst the crazy blend of mish mashed beats, guitar rhythms, and funky vocals. Wonderfully quirky and filled with great lyrics with flashes of humour this is a very upbeat and cheerful album almost guaranteed to make you smile. 7/10
Jonathan Boulet will be performing for two nights in London on the 12th and 13th of September in the Shackwell Armsbefore heading off across Europe. 7/10
