Ever since The Killers did that almost better than the original Joy Division cover one might’ve been left wondering why they hadn’t capitalized more on their Post Punk tendencies. ‘Run For Cover’ leans a bit more in that direction, which is refreshing after the Dad Rock of Battle Born. Seriously, Here With Me?! Wtf with that track?
Brandon Flowers can’t seem to shake his John Prine style storytelling and this is problematic. On the one hand this approach seems out of place in this setting. On the other hand their attention attention to song craft is what sets The Killers apart from their contemporaries like their Vegas counter parts Imagine Dragons. That and Imagine Dragons suck.
Nonetheless, the band found something worth while to jam to, it’s just the writing is laboured so the whole thing falls a touch flat. Brandon has given us many narratives and characters over the years and he’s on the front lines fighting the good fight to preserve songwriting as an art and we should appreciate his service. But it’s not totally unreasonable to ponder whether or not he could just relax a little and sing about fog or something. 7.7/10
