KIRAN LEONARD SHARES “COAYACÁN” VIA STEREOGUM
FIRST NEW MUSIC SINCE GRAPEFRUIT LP (OUT NOW ON MOSHI MOSHI)
KIRAN + BAND TO PLAY GREEN MAN TOMORROW, AHEAD OF UK TOUR NEXT WEEK
LISTEN AGAIN TO SOLO BBC 6 MUSIC SESSION FEATURING FOUR GUITARS PLAYED SIMULTANEOUSLY
“Grapefruit is by turns astounding, accomplished and difficult to digest, an album shouldering ambitions so big that you fear that at any point it might give way at the knees. Undoubtedly, Leonard is an autodidact of amazing talent and energy” – Pitchfork
“Away from those pernicious “big in 2016” lists designed to reward commercial potential rather than creative adventure, a singular new talent is being forged” – The Guardian
Kiran Leonard has shared a brand new track in the shape of “Coayacán.” The first new recording to surface since March’s acclaimed Grapefruit LP, it is, according to Kiran, about “Trotsky and his wife, at home in Mexico City, lamenting infighting on the left, in spite of a beautiful world rampant with tyrants.”
“Coayacán” was premiered by Stereogum, who described it as “a short, glitchy, hip-hop-leaning joint with jerky, J Dilla-esque chops of classical flourishes strung together, intricate percussion, and Leonard’s smooth tenor gliding above it all. The off-time-on-purpose feel makes for a beautiful incongruity with the silky texture of his voice.”
It’s taken from Garden In Bermuda, a ten track CDR album limited to 75 copies, handmade by Kiran himself. As well as Kiran Leonard recordings, it also features new recordings by alter-egos Advol, Pend Oreille and Akrotiri Poacher and will be on sale next at gigs next week.
Backed by a full band, the shows at Louisiana, Bristol (22nd), Patterns, Brighton (23rd), The 100 Club, London (24th), Deaf Institute, Manchester (25th) and Trades Club, Hebden Bridge (27th) represent his biggest headline shows to date.
Last week, he appeared on Marc Riley’s BBC Radio 6 Music show. Performing solo, he covered “Action Speaks Louder Than Words” by The Tammy’s as well as performing a new original song on four guitars simultaneously (click here to Listen Again and to see a picture of the set up).
