‘Martine creates rockin blend of pop guitars and massive vocal hooks’
The Line of Best Fit
Introducing Norma Jean Martine, who has just revealed her debut EP ‘Animals’ via Virgin EMI. ‘Animals’ is a four track EP featuring the pop rock title track ‘Animals’ alongside the gentler and more down tempo ‘Butterfly’s Dream’ co-written with Ed Harcourt , a remix of ‘Animals’ by Pablo Nouvelle and an acoustic version of ‘Only In My Mind’.
Norma Jean arrived in London four years ago via New York and a brief stint in Nashville. Neither felt quite right for Norma Jean and so encouraged by the voices of Amy Winehouse and Adele, she decided to come to London to forge her songwriting craft. It was a fortuitous move which landed her a manager and subsequent sessions with Romeo Stodart of The Magic Numbers, Joel Pott from Athlete, Ed Harcourt and the legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach.
For Norma Jean, music was a welcome distraction from school. Taking lessons in piano, flute and the oboe, she would rush home to play piano or muck around with her dad’s 8-tracks. Her parents weren’t musical but the house was full of cassettes and CDs, and Norma Jean became obsessed, wrapping the sleeve notes in plastic cases so she could take them in the shower and sing along. “I was a weirdo!” she laughs, as she recalls going to one specific store with her mum, consuming albums at listening posts then driving around ingesting the likes of Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin and Led Zeppelin.
