MAHALIA ANNOUNCES A LIVE SHOW AROUND ‘DIARY OF ME’ RELEASE
Rising star Mahalia has announced Diary of Me; an exciting new project from the young singer-songwriter, which is to be debuted as a series of videos, songs, an audio storybook and an extended visual piece. Having self-released the Never Change EP in 2015, plus the stunning ‘Back Up Plan’ earlier this year, Mahalia spent the first half of 2016 completing her studies at BOA Academy. Now freshly graduated, she has created this spectacular body of music and visuals, which delve deep into the complexities of teenage life as a growing star. Mahalia takes you through her journey with vivid storytelling, strikingly soulful tones and a gift for melody far beyond her years, with Supa Dups (John Legend, Mary J Blige), 1985 (Drake, Nicki Minaj) and Steve Fitzmaurice (Sam Smith, Aloe Blacc) on production duties.
Over the course of the 11 tracks, Diary of Me invites you to step into Mahalia’s world, with each visual accompaniment comprising old and new footage; each one a glimpse into a different part of her story. Mahalia describes the project as “a collection of music that really tells the story of my journey that I’ve been on. Almost like a diary of the past four years.” Tracks such as the upbeat ‘Seventeen’ present an honest reflection of her struggles of trying to fit in whilst staying true to herself. As an ambassador for IBYOUTH, this is an area that Mahalia feels passionately about; ‘Seventeen’ flourishes as an anthem that speaks directly to her peers about being comfortable with yourself exactly how you are. ‘Love Myself’ is a statement of empowerment, as Mahalia parts ways with someone who crossed her, nodding to the strong female R&B classics of the nineties by acts like Destiny’s Child’s. The gentle and stripped back ‘Rollercoaster’ showcases the tonal depth of the young singer with a tender message of young love. The collection also includes fan favourite ‘Borrowers’, which, following a touching Mahogany Session performance, has had a visual reworking to reflect the Diary of Me journal-like aesthetic.
The new songs and their accompanying videos will be released fortnightly – starting Wednesday 7th September – culminating in one full length visual at the end of the 16 weeks. Having recently turned 18, now is the perfect time for Mahalia to release this project, as she fully establishes her unique talent and sound and prepares to embark on the next stage of her journey. Growing up surrounded by music, Mahalia found her voice and was playing open mic nights by the tender age of 12. By the time she was 13, she was being championed by none other than Ed Sheeran, who asked her to support him on tour; Mahalia soon thereafter signed to Ed’s label, Asylum. Keen to continue her studies before working on a debut album, Mahalia has spent the past few years building a distinguished live reputation, providing perfect support to Emeli Sande, Kwabs, Kehlani, Lianne La Havas, Frances, as well as stunning audiences at festivals including The Great Escape, Latitude and Glastonbury and events such as TEDxTeen earlier this year. 2016 has also seen Mahalia’s acting debut, in the final chapter of Noel Clarke’s trilogy of films, BrotherhooD.
Mahalia joined the Hackney collective Rudimental on stage for special performances of their title track ‘We The Generation’ – which she co-wrote and is a featured artist on – on Jools Holland and at Lovebox festival. After an initial support slot with Ady Suleiman in 2015, Mahalia returned as main support for his UK headline tour this Autumn, performing tracks from Diary of Me live, before heading back to the studio to start work on new tracks for her debut album, due for release in 2017.
Diary of Me works to establish Mahalia as an artist who is not limited simply as a singer-songwriter; she is a captivating storyteller, both lyrically and visually, who has come of age and is sticking her flag in the sand, saying “This is me”, leaving us excited for what comes next in the journey of one of our nation’s brightest young talents.
Mahalia hosts a “Diary of me” launch party at The Waiting Room in Stoke Newington on December 2nd. As well as performing tracks from Diary of me, she will be joined by guest musicians and dj’s . WATCH AND LISTEN TO FIRST TRACK ‘SEVENTEEN’ HERE
