“Something of an instant hit at Lamacq towers…it hits you immediately right from the opening lines…if that doesn’t suggest someone with a taste of songwriting imagination I don’t know what does.” – Steve Lamacq, BBC 6Music
Man & The Echo return with new single ‘Vile as You Want’, released on 1965 Records on 11th March 2016
In 2015 Man & The Echo released three singles, toured relentlessly and made festival appearances at The Isle of Wight festival and alongside Billy Bragg at Glastonbury, as well as being invited to play live on Radio 4’s Loose Ends. They received critical praise for their first offerings and in particular their second single ‘All Right’ which was bigged up by Steve Lamacq on 6music and was made Absolute Radio’s ‘Single of the Week, of the Year.’ Their third single might have had a bit more radio play if it didn’t contain 25 uses of the word “fuck”.
2016 promises to be even busier for the 4-piece, who are currently holed up in their Warrington headquarters working on their debut album with highly sought producer Neil Comber (Django Django, M.I.A). Ahead of the album release later this year, they have a new single out on digital download and vinyl, the brilliantly titled ‘Vile as You Want’.
The song demonstrates how this band are completely unwilling to be defined by a single genre, as they channel 60’s girl groups before heading into a stomping, psychedelic one word chorus (“want, want, want, want”). You are almost caught off guard by the witty rebukes to the politically incorrect, as lyricist Gaz Roberts constructs an argument to confound bigotry and crams it neatly into a three minute pop song: “There is no liberal elite/Nobody’s stifling your speech/It’s still the same old boys on top/Yeah, quite a little melting pot/ And nobody’s saying you can’t be as vile as you want.”
