A live-action feature film adaptation of the ‘Gin Tama’ Manga sci-fi comedy will hit cinemas in 2017.
Actor Shun Oguri will play the protagonist, Gintoki Sakata, in the much-anticipated movie adaptation written and directed by “Hentai Kamen: Forbidden Super Hero” helmer Yuichi Fukuda.
Penned by Hideaki Sorachi and currently running in Shueisha Inc.’s Weekly Shonen Jump comic anthology, “Gin Tama” has more than 50 million copies in print and its anime adaptation has also become a huge hit.
The story is set in an alternate world of Edo, or old Tokyo, where aliens from another world called Amanto have gained power. With a ban on carrying swords, samurai warriors have lost their once-held power in society. Gintoki, who retains the samurai spirit, does whatever work comes his way.
Gintoki will be played by Oguri, who this year is marking the 15th anniversary of his acting career. Oguri has played many starring roles in films adapted from manga, including “Lupin the Third” and “Nobunaga Concerto.”
A big fan of “Gin Tama,” the actor has a curious tie with the original manga series as his parody character named Shunnosuke Oguri appears in the 27th volume.
Writer and director Fukuda has also worked on many projects based on comic books, including “Hentai Kamen,” on which he teamed up with Oguri, and a live-action TV drama adaptation of “Aoi Hono.”
