MARKER STARLING ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM ROSY MAZE
SHARES NEW SONG AND VIDEO – ‘HUSBANDS’
ALBUM RELEASED 30TH MARCH ON TIN ANGEL RECORDS
A sanguine dream of McCartney pop, Brazilian bossa nova, 1960s movie soundtrack sparkle and stoned Beach Boys baroque melodies, Rosy Maze is a new album from cult Toronto troubadour Chris A. Cummings, set for release 30th March on Tin Angel Records. To celebrate, fans can hear ‘Husbands’, the glorious storytelling song about a lost weekend that serves as the lead single, as well as watch its charming video, below..
The album seeps such sunshine that you almost believe him when he insists on its poppy charmer of a second track: “you are talking to a guy who’s never had a sad day in his life.” Recorded across four years and written across fifteen, the record – Cummings’ first as Marker Starling having blazed trails in Canadian avant-pop under the guise of Mantler since 2000 – has slow-burned into existence, maturing with its maker, who became a dad for the first time during its conception.
The result is a record defiant in its optimism, even when tinged with melancholy. “I try to be cheerful, without being sickeningly so,”states Cummings, “but also without being too depressing.” It’s a balance expertly measured, that cuts through your defences like a machete through butter.
Produced by long-time collaborator Zack G, with contributions from the best in Toronto orchestral talent, the record glowers with what Cummings calls “a happiness and hopefulness” at impending fatherhood that swept him up and “poured through me into those songs.”
There were darker, more sombre turns in recent years, however. In December 2012, Dennis Fray, his friend and backing singer, passed away. “We were very close,” says Cummings, who pays tribute to his late collaborator with a touching and subtle tribute on the album. “I had fully intended for Dennis to be included on the record, of course, and so after he died I went through my old demo cassettes and found the clip of him singing that’s included on the second interlude.”
