This is his second album and is a wonderfully decadent and dark creation filled with unsettling harmonies and haunting vocals. From the very opening chords you are pulled into a discordant rhythm punctuated by sharper notes underplaying deeply melodic vocals.
Just when you think you’ve gotten the hang of it the album suddenly changes into a more upbeat tempo of foot tapping percussion to then throw you back down into melancholia. Each song is carefully orchestrated to pull you along and deeper into Matt Finucane’s beautifully sinister world view. As you listen to the increasing more cheerful instruments you become aware of the darkening of his lyrics a wonderful contrast of light and dark. Two of my favourite tracks were ‘Doom Vibes’ a lyrically smouldering number with deep rhythm punctuated by brighter notes, and ‘Nemesis #2’ with its insistently cheerful instruments and sinister yet lusty lyrics. This is not easy listening but a beautifully crafted edgy and unsettling piece of work reminiscent of Bowie at his most eccentric.
Glow in the Dark is due for release on 13th August through the Light Crude label. 8/10
