Palm Honey – Starving Hysterical Naked

“This Reading band have delved into the depths of hazy guitars and fuzz pedal perfection, blanketing their gig-goers in psychedelic euphoria” – The Independent

Palm Honey unleash a sprawling new two-parter entitled Starving Hysterical Naked, Part 1&2, the title an ode to Allen Ginsberg’s infamous poem, HOWL. But there’s no beat-era smooth jazz to be found here – quite the opposite. From the offset, ‘Starving Hysterical Naked’ is a cacophonous garage jam. This is Palm Honey’s heaviest, darkest and most experimental number yet – the track has proven to be a somewhat polarizing force live, striking confusion and fear into the hearts of their more summery, pop-inclined fans. “Was that enough to break off?” asks frontman Joseph Mumford halfway through part one, wailing atop a pummeling guitar riff straight out of Thurston Moore’s book.
But Palm Honey are keen to contrast heaviness with harmony, interspersing noise rock sections with pretty, interlocking guitar work and motorik keyboard jams. Starving Hysterical Naked never stays in one place too long, eschewing traditional verse-chorus structure for something more fluid and progressive. Unlike their previous release Hot Simian Weather which saw Palm Honey dragging out a single idea to its logical conclusion, this time round they’re throwing every idea they come across into the mixing pot. There are obvious roots in the long improvisation sessions that the band conduct, preferring a natural approach to songwriting to overly considered self- editing.
Starving Hysterical Naked is Palm Honey at their rawest and sees them look to build on their groundswell of acclaim from the online community (The Independent, NME, DIY, The Line Of Best Fit, Loud & Quiet, SPIN) following their appearance on the BBC Introducing stage at this year’s Glastonbury Festival. With slots supporting the likes of Sundara Karma, Ulrika Spacek and YAK exposing a live show that has no boundaries, the band’s upcoming gigs in London and hometown Reading are sure to deliver something equally unique.
Palm Honey’s Starving Hysterical Naked is released on 29th September via Untitled Recs and will be available on all platforms.
