Three piece indie-pop band Peaness release new EP ‘Are You Sure?’ will be released on 5th May 2017 via Alcopop! Records on a ‘Mellow Yellow’ vinyl strictly limited to 500, packaged with their debut EP No Fun and another bonus track on the B Side. So it’s a no-brainer, we’re taking limited vinyl and a all female indie trio, musically tweaked my interest. also I rate lots on Alcopop! Records, it would be virtually immoral not to undertake a review, may even be a good idea to pre-order as their latest single ‘Same Place’/‘Seafoam Islands’ on Oddbox Records sold out in just two days.
The Are You Sure? single, collects a number of DIY sometime lo-fi with one blatant infectious creativity throughout, time then to tangent it from the horses mouth,
“A lot of songs come from the conversations we have” say the band of their influences on the record “‘Ugly Veg’ came from a documentary we watched about food waste. We got quite wound up by it and we wrote a song about it. There’s a lot about relationships and escapism too. ‘Same Place’ is just about being in the same place for a long time, Chester for us – just getting by, working, wondering ‘is this going to be for ever?’ and kind of accepting that it might be.”
Formed in Chester in late 2014, the band’s debut EP No Fun was self-released in 2015 and was, ironically, loads of bloody fun, packed with feel-good, sunshine indie-pop the likes of which it was impossible for Alcopop to ignore. The resulting furore saw the trio gigging extensively up and down the country alongside the likes of PAWS, The Spook School, Mammoth Penguins, Chorusgirl, Sauna Youth, Vangoffey, Yak, Goat Girl and The Lovely Eggs.
‘Oh George’ is a fairly lambasted self-centred fool, real or not, name may have been changed to save the innocent, but I for one, don’t think so, lyrically impressive. Of more import perhaps is Peaness’ ability to wrap a guitar led indie creative blanket around a remembered kitchen0sinck drama, another crowd fave for sure. Admirably backed by former single, ‘Seafoam Islands’ which is another gem, Carleia “Balla” vocal and guitar work is equally backed by Jess and Rachel on bass and drums respectively.
Of the remaining 3 tracks, think ‘Same Place’ is another memorable highlight, but all 5 tracks are quality in one way or another.
Talking of Peaness it’s not hard to hear what the fuss is about, the release of ‘Are You Sure?’ only enhances their growing reputation. 8.2/10
