Pom Poms have shared the video for their rambunctious second single “123”, available digitally via Square Foot Records. The lively video, directed by Jon Danovic, uses a VHS aesthetic and evokes the fun of Rock ‘n’ Roll High School and new wave film. On “123”, front-woman Marlene plays a game of cat-and-mouse with a suitor who becomes her target. Watch the video where it premiered on Rookie and below.
Pom Poms have also announced a Los Angeles residency at The Satellite. They will be playing every Monday night in February. All shows are free to the public.
“123” is Pom Poms follow up to their sublime dreamy debut single “Betty”. Watch the California noir meets Warhol screen test video for the original “Betty” here. They also released an alternate take of “Betty” that emerged unexpectedly from them improvising over a Bossa Nova rhythm. The magical realism of the video for “Betty – Alt Version”, also directed by Jon Danovic, evokes that unforeseen moment of creation. Watch it here.
Pom Poms are a new Los Angeles based group founded by vocalist/songwriter Marlene and Grammy-nominated producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Billy Mohler (Awolnation, Liz Phair, Kelly Clarkson, Macy Gray). The atemporal sound of “Betty,” which evokes a time and place that exists only in our dreams was their genesis. Their desire to put their distinctive spin on the sound of the great singers and writers they love from years gone by, inspired them to create a project that transcends both nostalgia and current tendencies with grand martini-infused arrangements and melodies. Their intoxicating cocktail mixes references like Quentin Tarantino, Ernie Kovacs, Roy Orbison, The Twilight Zone, Wes Anderson, Jean-Luc Godard, Yves Montand, Connie Francis, Johnny Cash, and Patsy Cline with their own refreshing perspective.
