Sonny Green began experimenting with music in his local Connexions youth centre in Southend when he was just fourteen. It was there that 140 TV filmed him freestyling and he was encouraged to make a 14-track mixtape that saw him express lyrically the social issues that were prevalent to his generation. The ‘When Words Fail Music Speaks’ tape went on to sell 10,000 copies and paved the way for a weekly residence at the recently closed Passing Clouds venue in Dalston.
Ditching his A-Levels, he pitched up his tent outside St Paul’s Cathedral to stand in solidarity with the Occupy movement and then at seventeen Sonny became the first-ever rapper to perform at The House of Commons as part of a concert organised in association with the Last Night A DJ Saved My Life Charity. He has since played live with Asian Dub Foundation all over Europe, toured with Pete Doherty and played this years Reading and Leeds Festivals. He was recently invited to record a Maida Vale session with the BBC and also appeared on the Russia Today channel where he performed ‘Bars’ from his debut EP – Watch here.
Sonny Green will announce some new live dates in the next few months in what is sure to be exciting future ahead for him.
