NYC-based collective Company of Selves are set to release their debut album, Butterfly Handlers & Memory Travelers, on cassette/digi formats on Sept. 25th via Fleeting Youth Records.
The first taste of the record is the gracefully layered, Presidential Model. Laced in elegant guitar plucks, woozy piano, and swirling undercurrents of various instruments, is a story about a woman beginning to awake from a world of mind-controlled imprisonment. Lead singer/multi-instrumentalist Christopher Hoffman softly sings the story with subtle yet stunning backup vocals from Christina Courtin.
Company Of Selves is comprised of a crew of friends who have been playing in and around New York for quite some time. Christopher Hoffman plays guitar, cello, keyboards, drum programming, some bass and a few other odds and ends; Christina Courtin on vocals, violin & pump organ; Ryan Scott on many guitars & vocals; Frank LoCrasto on keyboards; Jacob Silver on bass; Bill Campbell on drums & percussion; Ian Hoffman on vocals; and Robin MacMillan on drums.
The record is a novella of sorts dealing mainly with escapism, mind control and fantastic paranoid romanticism. It is encoded with backwards messages, occult and philosophical sound bites. The term Escape Rock was conjured by Christopher Hoffman one night during a late night communication with outer (or inner) forces.
