On October 27 and 29, London and New York will be hosting the twin Halloween events of 2011. The Grand Slambovians (AKA Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus of Dreams) descend on London’s Electric Ballroom with their quirky brand of roots ‘n’ roll music on Thursday 27 October, following up at the Gramercy Theatre, New York, on Saturday 29th.
Described by fans as "amazing mini festivals", each show will be unique and feature different but equally quirky attractions. Expect surprise performances by the band’s fantasy alter egos in addition to performances by some very special guests, plus Bizarre Circus, Music, Magik, Mischief and general Halloween Happenings. Over four solid hours of non-stop entertainment at this 1200-capacity Camden Town venue.
The Grand Slambovians (AKA Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus of Dreams), will be flying in especially from Sleepy Hollow, New York State, for this one-off UK spectacular – concert just doesn’t it justice – and this will be their sole European appearance for the remainder of 2011. The band have been called "the hillbilly Pink Floyd", which is an apt description, particularly if you throw in elements of Incredible String Band, Neil Young, The Band, Dylan, and maybe a dash of Zappa.
The band are: Joziah Longo (lead vocals, guitars, harmonica); Tink Lloyd (accordion, cello, flute, ukelele, theremin); Sharkey McEwen (guitars, mandolin, backing vocals); and Tony Zuzulo (percussion).
Having built up a sizable and loyal following in the UK with highly acclaimed festival appearances at Glastonbury, Celtic Connections, Rhythm Festival and others, The Grand Slambovians finally release their latest album, The Grand Slambovians, in the UK. The album received a "9 out of 10" from Americana UK, who proclaimed: "Every so often an album comes along that, for want of a better expression, knocks your socks off with its sheer energy… Like a hard drinking, fast living Willy Wonka, this is Americana with a twist but unlike the Urban Spaceman, The Grand Slambovians do in fact exist."
The ultimate DIY’ers, The Grand Slambovians run their own label and have released three critically acclaimed studio albums – The Great Unravel (2008), 2004’s double-disc Flapjacks from the Sky, and A Good Thief Tips His Hat (1998). The band’s all-over-the-map melodic avant folk conjures Tom Petty, Dinosaur Jr., and a fuller Buffalo Tom playing an exotic instrumental arsenal (accordion, cello, mandolin, ukelele, theremin) in addition to standard rock regalia. Lead singer/songwriter Joziah Longo’s theatrical talent in overdrive producing the Halloween show, is also currently writing and producing his third musical for Broadway’s Circle in The Square Theatre in NYC.
