Max, Bertie and Billy make up this ergonomic three-piece hailing from the Bristol area. They shared their first track back in 2012, which shot straight to number 13 on Hype Machine, with their second track amassing over 200k views. Now launching for real with the release of their debut EP ‘Where Do You Wanna Go?’, their infectious melodies and rhythms is a straight line to the dance floor.
Everything on this debut EP was recorded and produced by the band in their home-made bedroom studio, set-up with a little help from Grammy Award-winning producer Hugh Padgham (Phil Collins, XTC, The Police), who came onboard after meeting Max’s Mother while buying kitchen knives. It blends catchy guitar riffs and grooving basslines with a balance of sultry lyrics and a carefree attitude. Their open appreciation for great pop songs combined with a penchant for rock is something guaranteed to have their music blaring out of every car stereo from Stroud to Seattle. “We’ve always had an interest in that perfect three-minute pop song,” lead singer Max says, “but like any kid, it’s Rock and Roll that makes you want to play guitar.”
‘Where Do You Wanna Go?’ – the first track to be released from the EP – makes the perfect introduction to New Carnival’s sound. It’s funky, fast-paced, with a bass line that drives this dance-ready track.
The video provides a lesson in how to make a music video on a shoe-string: borrow a car from your local mechanic, tear it up around your home turf, get your mates to hang out the car in front with a camera, break into an airfield if you’re having trouble getting those high-speed shots and the job’s a good’un. This video is the first glimpse in to the world of New Carnival’s homespun magic. Check it out here:
“Like I Do” is the second offering from New Carnival’s debut EP. It is the darker, more hip-hop influenced brother of the first release. It shows the band in another light, the brooding more restless groove underpins this lyrically contemplative track, yet those captivating hooks still remain.
“End Song” is the third and final track to be released from New Carnival’s debut EP. All wrapped up in under 3 minutes – fitting for a track that was written and recorded in the same day. Combining the melancholic with a sardonic sense of humour, the track culminates in a euphoric finale to this EP.
The title track begs the questions ‘Where Do You Wanna Go?’ The answer is simple: wherever New Carnival may take you.
The band’s first London show is at the Old Blue Last on 10th November supporting Man Made. Do not miss them.
