Boston based record label Run For Cover released the new Young Statues EP earlier this month, and it comes highly recommended. Blending light acoustic sounds with driving indie rock, it’s a dynamic collection that really demonstrates a musical sensibility and high energy levels.
On the surface, it’s a blend of the indie tropes of Owl City and The Postal Service, with a vocal styling that is reminiscent of US rockers Third Eye Blind and Blink 182. It all comes together to create something original and familiar at the same time.
Opener ‘Eraser’ is a highlight, with a light opening that breaks into pounding acoustic rock which is far more typical of the rest of the tracks. The tempo, for the most part, remains high – it’s easy to imagine live shows bouncing up and down to these tunes. Similarly, a mellow, even folk like, opening to ‘Hung Me Out To Dry’ switches to a rhythmic, light and shade infused, four on the floor track.
All in all, these are 6 tracks of high energy and high quality, a strong addition to the US rock canon and well worth your time. 9/10
