Today, French pop act MOODOÏD reveals new single “Puissance Femme” as part of its ongoing PrimaDonna project celebrating female fortitude.
The dreamlike pop song features Stephanie Lange from iconic 80s German trio Saâda Bonaire, whose vocals shed a hint of mystery on this multifaceted feminine power.
The video for “Puissance Femme” (dir: Pablo Padovani) shows the duo sneaking through the dark paved streets of Bremen at night, with shadowy masks and long oversized trench coats – a film noir ambiance with an eighties twist.

Women have played a part in MOODOÏD / Pablo Padovani’s work from the very start – his idols include Patti Smith, Kate Bush, Björk and Cindy Sherman “artists who created enormous, dreamlike worlds, both in sight and in sound.” Melody’s Echo Chamber is the one who welcomed him into her band as her tour guitarist when he was still lacking the confidence to become a professional musician.
When MOODOÏD’s first album Le Monde Möö came out in 2014 (featuring “Je suis la montagne” and “De folie pure”, mixed by Kevin Parker of Tame Impala), he was backed by an all-female band, as well as an all-female technical staff; breaking the testosterone-fuelled conventions of music tours in which women are mostly absent, or overshadowed.The following is the encounter of Pablo Padovani, aka MOODOÏD, and Stephanie Lange, the magnetic voice behind Saâda Bonaire.
Two spirits and two eras meet: One comes from Bremen, Germany, amid the 1980’s New Wave. The other grew up in Paris, where the idea of a tribute to female voice arose.When Pablo reached out to Saâda Bonaire in the spring of 2020, he only knew their music; a savant mix of drum machines, vintage synthesizers and oriental instruments. For MOODOÏD, the connection was instant. The hit “You Could Be More As You Are” re-emerged a few years ago in compilations and in nightclubs after Captured Tracks reissued the trio’s eponymous album in 2013.
Saâda Bonaire was reborn from a nostalgic reaction to its crisp, danceable grooves. In writing his initial email, Pablo had in mind to reincarnate the unique voice of the band’s singer, Stephanie Lange.

Stéphanie and Ralph “von” Richtoven, the band’s historical producer, are quick to respond and, together with Pablo, endeavor to draw connections between the song “Puissance Femme” and Saâda Bonaire’s own identity. Could it be a pansexual love story? An ode to the millenial power of women? Or perhaps some kind of vocal and sentimental hide and seek?

Pablo proposes a text to Stephanie. Together, they exchange ideas, discuss and agree on a concept: the vocals will be central in the performance with two voices entwined as if under the spell of a powerful deity. Stephanie will sing as this mysterious and elusive woman who guides Pablo into foggy streets and through the haziness of his own feelings.Quickly running into the constraints of collaborating remotely – the duo decide to meet in person.
They meet up in Bremen. Its paved streets and crimson brick buildings are the perfect backdrop for “Puissance Femme”. Pablo and Stephanie get to work, communicating with rudimentary English, but it’s in a momentary gaze or a rhythm that their bond thrives. Music is their common language: tongues tie, enweave and enchant us. From two ghostly voices, one grave and the other ethereal, a story is born out of a song.

The encounter with Stephanie and resulting song “Puissance Femme” are the very embodiment of MOODOÏD’s PrimaDonna series of collaborative songs. By servicing his melodies to duets with women, Pablo confronts his own desires with rich and varied personalities, all of which are inspirations for MOODOÏD. The project’s first single “Idéal” featuring Juliette Armanet was released late last year via Because Music (Christine and the Queens, Justice, Metronomy etc), and there’s more to come.
