CELESTE has received a GOLDEN GLOBE® nomination for Best Original Song for ‘HEAR MY VOICE. The news comes as her debut album ‘NOT YOUR MUSE’ – released last Friday – sits at no.1 in the UK Official midweek Charts.
‘Hear My Voice’ is the focus track of the Netflix film The Trial of the Chicago 7. It was co-written with Golden Globe®-nominated composer Daniel Pemberton. Celeste and Daniel Pemberton are the only UK songwriters nominated in this year’s list.
“I’m so honoured and excited to be nominated for a Golden Globe for the song “Hear My Voice,” Celeste says. “I think perhaps when you first start singing and writing music you dream of these things, but you never necessarily expect it to happen to you. I’m so grateful to Daniel Pemberton and Aaron Sorkin for trusting me and getting me involved in this project and a big thanks to the HFPA for giving us this chance.”
Daniel Pemberton says, “When i first started on The Trial Of Chicago 7 I knew there was only one artist I really wanted to collaborate with…I was already in love with Celeste’s work, so I was over the moon when she wanted to get involved on the song. We might have had to make half of it in lockdown, trading badly recorded WhatsApp messages and voice memos with each other but by the time we finished it I knew we had something really special.
The craziest thing is this song was written about the events of the film, the protests of 1968-69. But by the time the song came out the world had completely changed around us, and the ideas rooted inside it’s simple message of hope – HEAR MY VOICE – took on a whole new relevance and meaning for the events happening today.
Celeste is one of the greatest singers of this generation with such a timeless voice and I’m incredibly proud that we made this song together…the fact it’s been recognised in this way has just made that even more exciting. Every artist wants the world to hear their voice – I’m super thrilled the Golden Globes have heard ours.”
The Trial Of Chicago 7 was written and directed by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Aaron Sorkin (Molly’s Game, The Social Network). ‘Hear My Voice’ is one of three original songs performed by Celeste on the soundtrack release. The album is comprised of the original score by Daniel Pemberton and released on Varèse Sarabande Records.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 tells the story of what was intended to be a peaceful protest at the 1968 Democratic National Convention that turned into a violent clash with police and the National Guard. The organisers of the protest—including Abbie Hoffman (Sacha Baron Cohen), Jerry Rubin (Jeremy Strong), Tom Hayden (Eddie Redmayne) and Bobby Seale (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II)—were charged with conspiracy to incite a riot and the trial that followed was one of the most notorious in history.
Celeste spoke of her contribution to the score to ‘Hear My Voice’ stating, “I am so grateful to be part of such an important and timely film. Daniel Pemberton and I wanted to create a song that would be as meaningful, relevant and powerful as Aaron Sorkin’s film. He’s a true visionary and it really is an honour to contribute to this story.”
