“Grecian Urn” is Adult Books’ first attempt to write a more electronic-leaning song. Although the final version does include live drums and some guitars, the synths are still the foundation, and they allowed the band to approach the song from a more architectural perspective. “Grecian Urn” premiered exclusively with Under The Radar and is the title track on Adult Books sophomore album Grecian Urn, which will be released on March 26th via Taxi Gauche Records.
Singer Nick Winfrey says about the song: “I wrote “Grecian Urn” during a really productive yet destructive period in my life. I would sometimes go days on end without sleeping, writing and recording music all night in my room and then listening to those recordings through headphones over and over again in bed. The lyrics are inspired in part by the John Keats poem, ’Ode on a Grecian Urn’, in which the speaker examines the images painted on an ancient vase, exploring what it means to be frozen in a moment of time for all eternity. At the time, I was fresh out of a relationship, unhappy at my job, and uncertain of my future, and could very much relate to the idea of being in limbo, paralyzed by inaction and unsure of how to move forward.” LYRICSI find it hard to sleep at night,Grecian Urn you gotta turn me right.Freeze frame: The dawn of cold rose light.Let me down, let me go, don’t let me know what’s on your mind.I’ll accept your excuses if you take mine.
How can I spare my eyes from sight?Let me down, let me go, don’t let me know tonight. How can I keep you from my life when your image is burned so deep across my mind? Push me out, let me in, reset to begin, I’m always on your side.We turn in circles but we never really hide.Fill me up, pour me out, touch your lips to my mouth, feel my hollow breath. My dampened echoes are the only thing that’s left.

With the help of childhood friends Sina Salessi (drums) and Alex Galindo (guitar/synth), Winfrey crafts lyric-driven dark pop gems that recall the hook-heavy guitar work of Johnny Marr, the just-below-the-collar angst of Mission of Burma, and the doomsday bellow of early Echo and the Bunnymen. Following a much-needed hiatus after the release of the debut album in 2016, Adult Books is finally ready to share new songs that are in the making.
