Dora Jar has today dropped a surprise new EP ‘3 Songs’, alongside a beautiful video for lead track ‘Quiver’. The hotly-tipped LA-based artist has received widespread plaudits for her early music, with ambitious latest single ‘Multiply’ the first taste of a longer-form project from Dora Jar set to be unveiled later this summer…Until then, ‘3 Songs’ – described by Dora as a “landscape of the heart”, with each song exploring the terrain of heartache and, eventually, healing (“a deep canyon, a cold beach, a warm desert”).
‘Quiver’, for instance, is a delicate ballad about opening yourself up to your emotions, after denying them for years: filmed by the ocean, its experimental video takes unlikely inspiration from the book ‘Jitterbug Perfume’ and the intense bleeding of beets. Elsewhere on ‘3 Songs’, ‘Believe’ is a beautifully raw appeal against existential dread, and the fear of being alone (completed just as the pandemic struck). ‘Look Back’, meanwhile, was written seven years ago, but in its portrait of those lessons learned (and sometimes forgotten) from those formative relationships, proved to be a fitting finale for ‘3 Songs’, and is theme of moving forward.

A fascinating young talent, ‘3 Songs’ offers a further glimpse of what lies behind Dora Jar. Dora was born in New York but raised in California, where she was brought up by her actress mum and translator dad to the kind of childhood that feels unconventional, except to all those inside it. Her introduction to songwriting came via her sister Lueza, who was born unable to walk and talk: she attended The Bridge School in LA, a music-focused, special educational establishment set up by Peggy and Neil Young, where Dora released that making music was all she wanted to do in life. Today Dora’s influences range from the rebel spirit of early Gwen Stefani or the stripped-back songwriting of Regina Spektor to The Foo Fighters and Outkast: the results are shape-shifting but emotionally charged alternative-pop.Dora Jar introduced herself with one-off single ‘Did I Get It Wrong?’ in 2020, an atmospheric purge of paranoia and self-doubt (produced by Felix Joseph, who previously collaborated with Pa Salieu and Jorja Smith, and name-checking her late sister in its affecting lyric). The arresting followup, ‘Multiply’, showcased a quieter (and heavier) side to Dora Jar, whilst refusing to be pinned down musically or spiritually. ‘3 Songs’ is a beautiful prelude to Dora Jar’s first, longer-form project to follow ‘Multiply’, and much like her pseudonym – her Polish family-name, spliced in half – leaves everything to play for. “I want to leave the door ajar in my imagination,” she concludes. “Let light seep in through the crack.” For a talent as distinct as Dora Jar, ultimately all you have to do is step through.
