Steiger ‘The New Lady Llama’ New album released 9th April

Inspired by the collaboration with Joe Talia, the band went even more detailed on the new album. More attention was paid to the pre-production process and together with producer Cesar De Sutter-Pinoy (brother of Gilles) Steiger looked for the right, fresh sounds, structures and textures for each song. With this new album, the focus is even more on achieving a balance between electronics and acoustic instrumentation. In terms of content, the band goes from very light, quietly rippling songs to dark sound explorations to solid synth songs. ‘The New Lady Llama’ is the next step in Steiger’s fascinating evolution as the trio continue its path of renewal and enterprise.

Tracks like new single ‘Lambda’ display a stronger emphasis on sound exploration. Steiger are not afraid to experiment with off-kilter sounds and atmospheres. The band aimed for compact songs and a stronger emphasis on sound exploration and an experimental production process. They completely left behind any genre limitations and in this way created an even more distinctive sound. Striking is also the increased use of contrasts.

The music keeps construction and deconstruction, form and abstraction, in a remarkable balance. ‘Just A Rite’ for example is full of rapid twists and turns taking something straightforward and turning it on its head with stunning results. Elsewhere, ‘Sun Dog’ and ‘Absolution of a French Fry’ muddy the confines of the organic and the electronic resulting in something deeply cohesive and compelling.

With less focus on improvisation and not leaving anything to chance Steiger opted for a fully detailed approach of sounds and structures. The end result is the most accessible Steiger album so far.

In the summer of 2017, Steiger won the young Jazz talent competition at Gent Jazz festival, which enabled them to realize the out of the box ‘Give Space’ project. The trio’s highly anticipated sophomore album ‘Give Space’, released 14th September 2018 on Sdban Ultra, was recorded at 7 different locations, with the music composed to fit and fight these locations within a dialogue of acoustics, atmospheres, field recordings, reverbs, ambient sounds.

All collected within the search for the unpredictable. In September 2018 Steiger was one of twelve emerging jazz ensembles performing at the prestigious 12 Points Festival in Dublin. A unique networking opportunity for its participants, 12 Points is a valuable resource for festival bookers and jazz media.

Steiger are Gilles Vandecaveye (piano, keys), Kobe Boon (bass) and Simon Raman (drums).
