Toronto-based project, Praises (formerly one-half of Beliefs), the project of Jesse Crowe – signed to Hand Drawn Dracula (Chastity, Tallies), who is announcing their new EP, EP4 with this first single/video, “A World On Fire.

Crowe previously found success at Cvlt Nation, Xtra Magazine and Exclaim but this new EP – out August 5 – really levels up on some of their eerie, electronic goth tones which to me, draw on the likes of Nick Cave, Annie Lennox’s avant-gardism, Rachel Goswell’s shoegaze and Patti Smith’s poetic delivery.

“A World On Fire” acts as a really neat intro to the new, more refined sound, turning the dial on the industrial, synth-based offerings, adding in hints of Crowe’s live show whilst finding them team up with DJ/producer, Shortbloom (aka Sachin Mohindra).

Thematically, the new track imagines a diaspora and a war, whilst tackling other ideas of mortality, identity and love. Additional distanced contributors to Praises include members of Blonde Elvis, Chandra and Sauna. I think there’s a lot to enjoy here if you’re into the likes of Portishead and Zola Jesus and that brand of introspective, dark atmospheric electronica
