Schapka shows in their brand new video how it is possible to perform masculinity in a sensitive and appreciative way. Watch the Schapkas as they show their feelings (not only when cutting onions), as they nervously meet each other, cheer each other up and give away gingerbread hearts.

The actors* of your hearts (or gender-stars) are Romeo Montero, a deeply romantic boi, Lonesome Luis, who loves The Cure and lidschatten, Dorian Gay with his shyly seductive manner and Laurence Gaultier, who stands up for free love but of course only with consensus. They all bring their own stories, but an afternoon together in the Bohemian Prater brings them even closer together than they already are after long nights in the rehearsal room and hot car rides in the tour bus.

This song is about pointing out how the world of masculinity is constructed and can be exposed, away from learned structures and shorter bathroom lines. Contrasting the lyrics about everyday experiences with toxic masculinity, you can spend a colorful, cotton candy-sweet fair visit with Vienna’s four favorite bois in the music video. The text-picture scissors in this video has a painted mustache and scissoredscissoredscissored himself with LUST and shy giggles.

“The concept of man(™) is a questionable thing”. That’s a line from the song, which is poppier than the usual Schapka songs. The lone wolves play with campfire guitar, look into the distance and ponder about being a man. Schapka take toxic masculinity to task. Masculinity in the sense of: Strong, Firm, High, Low, Full, Intense, Stable, Massive, Powerful (LOL). They want to point out that all these stereotypes are made like a gingerbread heart – invented by a funny baker – but not carved in stone. In their song, the feminist punk musicians in drag perform an alternative masculinity

Schapka is a band of women who started playing together in their teens. The band has no front woman and they are an extremely well-functioning live band: there is shouting, laughing, jokes are made. All this happens unapologetically, without ever being ashamed of a wrong note, a bumpy announcement. Schapka has been reaching large crowds in front of stages like the Popfest and the Arena in Vienna, the Lila Festival in Switzerland or the Orpheum in Graz for 10 years now, thanks to their clear song content and witty performances.  The upcoming album “Schall Bumm” will continue to deal with political topics that have hardly been sung about so far. Because rarely do women sing about squirt ejaculate and a call to consider sex work as normal work in such a sharp, at the same time accessible way. It’s about feminism, pop, queer-ness and bodily fluids.

To sum up: Very young self-confident female musicians, a non-hierarchical approach within the band and with the audience. Provocative and taboo feminist topics.
