Bow Anderson has today released an official version of viral track ‘20s’ which is available now on EMI Records. It’s the budding pop star’s first new music of 2022, having finished last year on tour with the likes of Mimi Webb and Ella Eyre, played her first ever headline dates (including a sold-out show at London’s Courtyard Theatre and 2 sold-out Edinburgh shows) as well as scooping the Best Pop Act prize at the prestigious Scottish Music Awards. Having picked up additional early support across Vevo Ones to Watch, Radio 1, and gone viral on Spotify’s Viral Charts off the back of just one EP – ‘New Wave’ – Bow Anderson is currently working on much more music to follow this year…Bow Anderson quietly uploaded the demo of ‘20s’ to Tiktok on Christmas Eve, thinking little of it other than sharing a sound (and sentiment) she was experimenting with at the time. It quickly blew up online, leading to Bow releasing the official version today as she adds the finishing touches to future singles.
“I was having a stressful day comparing myself to others and being a wee negative Nancy which is very unlike me! At 19 years old I moved to London to pursue a career in music and since day dot I have loved every minute and I wouldn’t change it for the world. Having said that, it’s hard. There’s a lot of pressure in your 20s to be social but also be hard working. To drink and party but be healthy. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions and we are still learning who we are. I wanted to write this song because I think a lot of people think they are the only ones going through it (including myself), when really we all have our struggles. I hope this song helps people realise it’s okay to not have it all together and be perfect because someone’s unique qualities is what makes them special.”
It’s this positive mentality underpins everything Bow Anderson does – and her incredible road to making pop music. Bow Anderson was born and bred on the east side of Edinburgh, where – as a teenager – she took part in competitive trampolining; training with people who went on to be part of Team GB before a freak accident put a halt to her competing (“I almost lost my leg,” she shrugs today). But as the body she had bet her future on proved fallible, Bow found her voice. During her rehabilitation, Anderson’s father would sing with her each night to help her get to sleep, which led to Bow moving to London after her recovery to hustle making music. Coming from a dance and sporting background, Bow knew that to succeed she would have to put in the graft, as the pop she’s drawn to today mirrors: from the bombast of classic Motown to empowered female role models like Beyonce. Bow Anderson’s early music, continuing today with ‘20s’, turns adversity (romantic, physical or emotional) into a point of strength. Whether discussing broken hearts, a ‘20s’ crisis, or a life-changing injury, Bow Anderson believes that everything happens for a reason. Pulling all the strings and tying them together is Bow herself, Scotland’s next great export and pop shot through with sporting spirit.
