The Pop Group and dub maestro Dennis‘Blackbeard’ Bovell MBE have today released Live Y in Dub – a three-track EP recorded at the 2021 live premiere of Y in Dub at Coventry Cathedral Ruins: https://mute.ffm.to/ylivedub. Terry Hall invited The Pop Group & Dennis Bovell to perform at his Home Sessions festival, part of Coventry UK City of Culture 2021 and, with all the magnitude of the band’s original debut release from 1979, Live Y in Dub documents this world premiere.

This new live EP precedes the release of the vinyl edition of their album Y in Dub from last year – the acclaimed dub version of one of the era-defining releases of the post-punk period. The vinyl edition is released on 25 March 2022 pressed on heavyweight dub friendly vinyl with an exclusive poster.Y in Dub is Dennis Bovell’s rework of The Pop Group’s 1979 debut, Y, with the addition of ‘She Is Beyond Good & Evil’ and ‘3.38’, to create a collection of dub versions that match the prodigious intensity of their source material. The album reflects the enterprising originality of the dub and reggae music that inspired The Pop Group, as well as the legendary ingenuity of their longstanding collaborator Dennis Bovell, recently awarded an MBE for his services to music.
Testifying to the legacy of the original yet also signifying a new, alternate triumph, Y In Dub sees The Pop Group and Bovell explore latent possibilities within the fabric of Y. Here they amplify shadows and echoes, intensively accentuating the resonance of each element. The original material is submerged and prolonged, shattered, splintered, and sculpted into turbulent, contrasting forms which deviate from the original tracks in compelling, unexpected ways. “Dub to me is the music of chance.
