‘Mass Appeal’ is the brilliant new single from Franc Moody, available now on Juicebox/AWAL. It’s the first taste of the unique London band’s forthcoming second album, which will be released later this year and follows the homegrown success of debut album ‘Dream In Colour’ – which saw the collective sell out the likes of Shepherd’s Bush Empire just as the pandemic struck, surpass 50 million streams, and earn co-signs from dance pioneers like Skream and Nile Rodgers. Currently on a sold-out tour around the US, Franc Moody will announce further live plans soon. ‘Mass Appeal’ is the mark of a new era for Franc Moody, its taut, digital funk recalling Prince or Jam & Lewis in a quiet commentary on consumer-driven culture. Co-produced with Karma Kid, the off-kilter and industrial feel – say Franc Moody – was designed to “conjure up the notion of mass production and anti-individualism. We wanted something jagged and robotic, and the lyrics subconsciously found their way to those themes.”
Standing out from the crowd has long been at the core of Franc Moody themselves. One of the UK’s most feel-good and accomplished bands, their dizzying mix of disco, house, funk and hedonism has won them a hugely impressive grassroots audience, and a pop sound reminiscent of the best party you’ve never been to. Largely via word-of-mouth, Franc Moody – led by co-vocalists & producers Ned & Jon – first emerged from the Tottenham’s tight-knit warehouse scene. They channelled all this into debut album ‘Dream In Colour’, which dropped just as the world went into lockdown (ironically enough, for a record themed on togetherness, community, and the tension between offline and online life). Never ones to wallow, Franc Moody threw themselves into social projects like the Music Venues Trust fundraiser and a wholly sustainable merch line, also hosting online parties with their fans and releasing the lockdown EP, ‘House Of FM’.
Throughout, ideas were bubbling away for Franc Moody’s second album: a project that appears to look deeper inwards but also push further outwards into exciting new territories. A best-kept-secret band with, in fact, ‘Mass Appeal’, watch out for more from Franc Moody coming soon.
