After launching with the genre-blurring “Two Seater” in 2021, Bristol born, London based vocalist and visual artist Willow Kayne has enjoyed a prodigious ascent to the pinnacle of pop music’s more daring corners; taking inspiration from the bass-tinged sonics of her hometown while writing some of the genre’s most memorable hooks of recent years. Her postmodern approach to songwriting was rewarded in 2021 with Willow receiving the Ivor Novello Rising Star award, setting her on a path to achieve greatness from the outset of her career. After her riotously received debut EP Playground Antics was released earlier this year, Willow Kayne returns today to open the next chapter with a brand new single and video, “Final Notice.”
A love letter to the junglist stylings of her hometown of Bristol, “Final Notice” finds Willow in defiant form, sending a message to all those who try to mold her into something more palatable. Opening to a stunning acapella harmony, the track descends into chaos with an instrumental from Monro that recalls pioneers such as Roni Size over frenetic breaks, dub-inspired basslines and triumphant horns. It’s a perfect encapsulation of Willow as an artist; fiery, often hilarious and completely impossible to box in.
The track’s video takes cues from the iconic British movie Human Traffic, with Willow and her friends arriving at a local record store before turning the place into a raucous party, filled with Willow’s real life friends and family. The visual is a tribute to the rave culture that helped to birth her creatively, as well as a moment to allow those around her to shine while doing the thing she loves most.
A rebellious cut of jungle-infused pop madness, “Final Notice” is yet another example of just how unique a talent Willow Kayne is. Taking one of the UK underground’s most confrontational sounds and repurposing it to create an irresistible work of pop; Kayne’s ability to recontextualise sounds from the past, present and future while writing some of the most exciting accessible sounds of recent memory mean that the sky is the limit for one of the UK’s most promising burgeoning talents. With Playground Antics, Willow Kayne introduced herself – with her forthcoming batch of new music, Willow will stamp her mark on the landscape of popular music at large with more adventurous, completely singular creations coming in the near future.
