Twenty-one year old artist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Jordana will release her new record Face The Wall this Friday, and today she shares one more single and music video before the album is out in its entirety. Jordana is a sonic chameleon, with every new release exploring a different and unexpected side of her musical palette, while remaining just as impressive and captivating as the previous one. This new record sees Jordana put her handmade, DIY indie pop charm to the side, in lieu of more polished pop bangers as she stepped into the studio for the first time.
Following the impossibly catchy ‘Catch My Drift’, the spare pop gem ‘Pressure Point’, and the 90s alt-rock pop homage ‘To The Ground’ is ‘Go Slow’. The ascendant, titular track brings us to the heart of this album. Jordana explains, “‘Go Slow’ is about facing your self brought battles and acknowledging your imperfections. Co-produced by Jordana, who also performed every instrument on the record, Face The Wall will be out this Friday, May 20th via Grand Jury. With perseverance and self-discovery at its core, Face The Wall glistens as it finds Jordana coming to terms with everything, big and small, from pandemic isolation and depression to breakups to veganism to how her complicated relationship with faith is what ultimately led her to music despite that faith being at odds with her sexuality and own belief system. “The album title has a few meanings to me,” she explains. “Mostly, it’s about not giving up. The wall can be anything in your way. The album is a sort of reminder to myself that I have to face those things, and I can’t take the easy route and turn around.” The result is her most confident and kaleidoscopic work to date.
Jordana is fresh off of an entirely sold-out tour with TV Girl, her collaborators on 2021’s acclaimed Summer’s Over EP. Jordana will bring Face The Wall on tour across the US this Spring for a series of headline shows, support tours with Remi Wolf and Wallows, and perform at Firefly Music Festival. Jordana’s mission is simple: keep trying to be her, even when it’s hard. So it’s no surprise perseverance and self-discovery are central themes on the upcoming record Face The Wall, out May 20th on Grand Jury.
But carving her path — being who she wasn’t in order to find out who she actually was — is part of what Face The Wall (“and life!” Jordana points out) is all about. “I don’t know if I would have found the violin if I didn’t have that church part of my upbringing,” Jordana wonders aloud, tossing out jokes about how the experience of watching someone playing at her church would eventually turn her into an “orchestra rat,” or how it led her to busking on the boardwalk of her town of North Beach, Maryland as a 13-year-old.
But Jordana didn’t find herself on stage until she truly found herself on an iPod Touch, where she cobbled together homespun pop songs on a GarageBand app in her bedroom that catapulted her to where she is today. Since debuting that first bedroom pop single “Jackie’s 15” on Bandcamp at 17, Jordana’s amassed a legion of online followers and fans, collaborated with a fellow rising stars like the producer MELVV, Magdalena Bay, and TV Girl, and landed a contract with the NYC mainstay indie label Grand Jury.
In 2020, she released a slew of singles and two EPs, Something to Say and To You, during a year in which most artists found themselves flailing under lockdown. But despite all of her success, the future didn’t gleam as brightly as promised: relationships dissolved, she moved across the country alone, and the world got pretty depressing for everyone. So, while Face the Wall is Jordana’s most confident and kaleidoscopic album to date, it’s also a direct confrontation with the self that traffics in catharsis over pathos, empowerment over defeat.
To date Jordana has received praise from the likes of The Guardian, FADER, NME, The Line of Best Fit, Stereogum, MTV and more, and is touring with Wallows in the US later this year, as well as a series of headline shows. Watch this space for more Jordana news to come.
