‘LOST SOUL’ on Spotify and Apple Music
Beach Baby have unveiled the new video to ‘Lost Soul’ – their first single since signing to Island Records. The band have just concluded a 15-date headline tour – featuring a sold-out date at The Lexington – and a stand out performance at Great Escape festival in Brighton last weekend. Having just announced a new show for September, the band will perform a headline date at London’s Scala on Friday 9th September.
With a video directed by Charlie Rotberg of Beaty Heart, ‘Lost Soul’ blends Beach Baby’s slacker-inspired alternative rock with a keener focus on sunny 60s US pop – an idiosyncratic mix quickly becoming typical of the London four-piece. Lyrically, though, it’s less idyllic, describing an existential crisis in which (say the band) “you feel like a spectator in your own life, and are struggling to find a purpose. We also tried to infuse ‘Lost Soul’ with some of the sex and bravado of Motown, which is a new thing for us.”
In little over a year, Beach Baby have built up a tightly-sealed, vaguely surreal world of their own. They met in the musically-rich halls of Goldsmiths – via Brighton, Dorset and Sheffield – where co-vocalists Ollie and Lawrence placed an advert in halls looking to flesh out their then-folk-driven duo. Joined by drummer Shep and bassist Jack, the band’s songs – often transatlantic in sound – touch frequently on those less-glamorous uncertainties of post-campus life: apathy, escapism, and the distance between your own future and the iconic bands or movies you grew up on (John Hughes or ‘The Virgin Suicides’ have been an equal catalyst for Beach Baby’s early videos, with their wryly-detached snapshots of suburbia).
What a difference, then, twelve months can make: largely DIY, Beach Baby have picked up across-the-board support at Radio 1, Beats 1, 6Music and Radio X, topped Hype Machine, eclipsed 1 million streams on Spotify, and played to audiences around the UK, Europe and US. Currently recording their debut album, ‘Lost Soul’ suggests Beach Baby are moving closer to their moment in the sun.
